Thailand – THE GENESIS OF CHAMPION JAMBULS
Hi all
Something to share about the latest news in Thailand concerning the world of jambuls:
A SYMPHONY OF GENETICS:
The thai breeders are racing to produce a new race of champion jambuls, they are combining champion pure red-whiskered bulbul (RWB) bloodlines with other breeds of bulbul like the yellow-vented bulbul (YVB) and stripe-throated bulbul (STB).
Usually it is difficult to pair a RWB male with a YVB female because by nature the YVB is a fiercer bird. Now the top breeders are turning the tables on nature by selecting Champion RWB males, this makes it easier to circumvent nature’s barriers and provide a better yield of higher quality offspring. This means you get a champion’s traits and the wild fierce attributes in one package.
Top breeders are breeding to 2nd generation level (75% crossbreeds) so these can compete in jambul competitions and yet harness both the prowess of genetics – 1) champion traits 2) fierceness, loudness and exotic song quality. 3) retaining the standard looks of RWB, meaning it has a reddish backside not yellowish and it’s crown is longish and slightly curved.
THE ASSAULT BEGINS:
On the forefront of the mutant crossbreeds, the YVB-RWB 75% are leading the charge in greater numbers and better quality than ever before.
What is most exciting is that a few reputable breeding farms are finally keeping to a strict quality control on breeding true champion bloodline baby jambuls -
Jambuls can breed and produce offspring up to 4 times a year. Top breeding farms however have limited to 1 matings a year per paired birds to prevent a dilution of quality in the offspring. Yes, there are still many other breeding farms which breed for quantity instead of quality. These farms take advantage of the trend by selling RWB, crossbreeds from low to moderate prices, sometimes they take better quality offspring and sell them at champion bloodline prices though their lineage is questionable. That is how Sg/Malaysian folks get to know about low-priced crossbreed jambuls. I used to rear such birds for 5 years, not one made it to the 4 Rounds class level.
THE BLOOD OF CHAMPIONS:
What we are seeing are bloodlines of:
Class 1 – Golden Voice - loud voice, excellent song quality, improved learning in songs and keke prowess.
Class 2 – International Category - loud voice, excellent physical stamina in display, pumping and jumping, loud keke ability.
Class 3 – 4 Rounds – Frequent singing of songs, loud keke.
GENESIS OF BREEDING CHAMPION JAMBULS:
The Champion RWB father is usually a large long bodied, fierce bird. Loudness of voice is preferred when the breeders select the father bird. Champion means champion at major competitions, not your neighbourhood level. These Champions are proven, they are masters in songs, display, keke and most of all – fierceness.
The mother bird is a YVB 100%. She is chosen for her fierceness, large size and long body. The ideal mother is a YVB 100% reared from young:
a) proper solid nutrition is provided from young to build her foundation in health, and physical genetics.
b) She is trained to learn and call RWB songs, especially the ‘chok’ notes in song for GV and Int’l Cat class.
c) She receives song training from at least 5 GV Champion RWB birds. The breeder farm schedules the champions birds to provide training or go for major competitions if available when they are not breeding.
Note: For best bloodlines, both the YVB 100% Female and her YVB-RWB 50% Female offspring go through a), b) and c) above.
PRICINGS, SALE OF CHAMPION BLOODLINE OFFSPRING:
The same “price respective to champion bloodline” mechanism applies to jambuls as from the world of meroboks…..The offspring of A grade merboks can sell for SGD20,000 per bird and the waiting queue can stretch to 2 years. I must say that jambuls are more affordably priced and are enjoyed by more people.
Nevertheless the objectives/benefits of a bird descended from BOTH a champion bloodline and a YVB/STB cross makes the RWB crossbreed descendent a very exciting experience to rear, train and compete!
THE BREEDING LINE:
I attach a illustration of how they are breeding out the Champion Crossbreed Jambul.
Hope this article gives another aspect to jambuls in Thailand.
